Set up twenty-eight years ago, the 'Computing Technology Industry Association' (or CompTIA in short) is a not for profit institution. They have grown step by step & now are world leaders in IT certifications that are vendor neutral. This essentially means they're absolutely free to independently create and monitor examinations and certifications that are needed by the IT industry, irrespective of a specific business' commercial interests. With the current shift towards inter connectivity and systems convergence, this is a welcome move for the IT trainee, because it gives cross platform learning & a knowledge of 'integration'. CompTIA gathers together different business and academic industry groups when designing or upgrading an examination, to ensure all things are thought about and the most commercially related syllabuses are crafted.

Normal learning time for these exams are thought to be around 100-150 hrs for the A+ , & 75-100 hours for the 'Network+' . Using the appropriate multimedia training package that is supported by accredited examination preparation software, the two certifications could be completed in 6 months for the student who's studying around a job.

With regard to Network+ , the old 'N10-003' has now been replaced by the 'N10-004', the 2009 edition. As well as retaining it's teaching on network management & infrastructure, the upgraded 2009 exam places a greater importance on security, wireless-networking skills and network design concepts.

Many of these jobs can be starting-points for higher-level I.T. positions, therefore, much like all career tracks, it's vital that you first explore precisely what your end goals are, and which learning-style you favour.
