A CCNA course (Cisco Certified Network Associate) leads to a qualification which will enable you to work on the maintenance and control of 'routers' and networks. Routers are the little (and not so little!) boxes which connect networks of computers to other networks of computers - usually over dedicated lines or the internet.

Many big companies that have multiple locations or 'satellite' offices use them to allow their networks to keep in touch. Because routers are connected to networks, it's also important to gain a very good working knowledge of how networks operate. Otherwise you'll struggle with the CCNA course and, more importantly, find the actual day-to-day work difficult to handle.

There's also a much more advanced level, called the CCNP (Cisco Certified Network Professional.) We'd recommend that you don't even think about training for your CCNP until you've had a couple of years working in the industry and are qualified as a CCNA.
